I'm looking for a book by Robert Neill but I can't remember the title. It is about the '45 rising as it affects people in the Lake District. The hero is an ex-soldier who has been induced to carry requests for help to various land-owners etc in Cumberland. The heroine is a young woman to whom he carries his message but who is not interested. She is running a successful business based on smuggling brandy etc. Please can anyone help me?

I think this could be WITCHFIRE AT LAMMAS.

If you're interested in the '45, and if you don't know them already, D K Broster's The Flight of the Falcon, and Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series are necessary and compulsive reading!

Someone suggested a book by D.K.Broster. I think the title should be 'The Flight of the Heron'.

You're absolutely right, that was a slip of the brain translated to the keyboard! Flight of the Heron it is.
