I am trying to track down a novel, I think a 20th century one, an excerpt of which appeared in an Advanced Level (A'Level) English literature High School text book dated from the 1980s (used in British schools).  I'm pretty certain it was an opening paragraph to the novel where a character called Hellwise was mentioned and a phrase worded something like this: "... it was when you looked at his mouth ... with a hint of repression, longing held in leash ..."
