I am looking for the title and/or author of a book I remember reading as a child in the 1950s about some children hiding in the attic of a house/chateau on Guernsey (it could have been one of the other Channel Islands) and hiding from the German soldiers during WWII occupation, and trying to live there and remain undetected.

I am in my 60s and have only a hazy memory of the story but it must have impressed me to have remembered even something! This memory was prompted by my reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society book.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

The only book which comes to mind is "We couldn't leave Dinah" by Mary Treadgold. The Channel Island is called Clerinel (fictional). You can check out the plot if you google "We couldn't leave Dinah".

  It was very popular in schools in Britain during the late 1940s and 1950s and was a Carnegie winner.

 Let us know if this is the one. There are others I know about but this is the most likely.

Doesn't exactly fit your description, but possible:
<i>Tomorrow is a Stranger</i> by Geoffrey Trease.
The children themselves do not hide, but they do meet someone who does, in a hidden room in a cellar.
Very good book, even if it's not the one you're thinking of.
