Could it be "The Wild Heart" by Helen Griffiths? This was about an extremely fast horse that lived on the pampas in South America, and was regularly hunted by gauchos because of her speed. She lived alone on the pampas most of the time, as I remember.  It was a children's book. The horse was known as 'La Bruja' (The Witch) because she was so volatile and fightable.

Actually I remember she was known as 'La Bruja' because the gauchos considered her ugly.

You're right, it was because she was considered ugly. (NB: Helen Griffiths' books *always* have an unhappy ending, this one is no exception.)
